Discovering the story of one of the great communities of the Jewish diaspora is one of Cape Town’s
not-to-be missed heritage experiences.
Situated on perhaps the most historic urban square mile in the country and built as an extension of South Africa’s oldest synagogue, the South African Jewish Museum is a marvel of modern architecture whose contents mirror this fusion of the old world and the new. Its gleaming interiors house a range of interactive displays, audio-visual presentations and fascinating artefacts, taking visitors on a journey back to South African Jewry’s early roots in Eastern Europe and elsewhere. Featuring a life-sized recreation of a shtetl, the museum traces the cultural history of Jews, Jewish life and Judaism in general.

The Story of a South African Jewish Community
On Monday 9 September a new exhibition opened at the South African Jewish Museum.
The exhibition, entitled Echoes of Parow – The Story of a South African Jewish Community, is a creative audio-scape that tells the story of the small, tight-knit Jewish community of Parow.

Exploring Our Stories

At birth we are all handed a bag that someone else packed. We carry it without questions for a long time until about middle age, at which point we have collected so much baggage of our own we begin wondering why this bag is so heavy. Why are we carrying it? If we're lucky, there's someone left to ask about the contents. As the people of the book, it is incumbent on us Jews not only to explore our history but also to record it. Telling stories, writing stories and reading stories— that is our legacy as Jews.
SCHOOLS
The SAJM offers programmes to students of all ages from pre-school to university level. We can arrange a general tour lasting about an hour, or a programme tailored to specific ages, interests and requests. Theme-specific programmes are also developed around our temporary exhibitions.
